So it’s been over 2 years since I posted a blog. Holy moly. Where on earth has the time gone?!
I’m not sure why I stopped writing blogs. Maybe I didn’t think I had good stories to tell. Maybe I just didn’t prioritize it while I’ve been focusing on other areas of this project. But recently there have been so many times when I start to type an Instagram caption, then delete parts of it because it’s so dang long it should be a blog post instead.
That’s when the lightbulb switched on. Why COULDN’T it be a blog post instead? I love writing as a personal practice; it helps me get the jumble out of my head and onto paper so I can sift through to try and refocus on the things that matter. And sometimes that comes out as something that others might even find helpful.
That’s a long-winded could-have-been-a-tweet explanation (and apology) for why I’ve taken a break. I’m kicking off my new season of writing with one of those this-should-be-a-blog-post Instagram captions I started writing. It’s all about my favorite place: my bedroom.
My bedroom is my safe haven. For years and years now, I’ve made it a priority to make my bed every. single. day. My philosophy is that, even if the rest of my home / life / schedule is a disaster, at least I’ve accomplished that one thing each morning. One corner of my life feels in control.
My bedroom — like the rest of my apartment — is also ever-evolving. I’m always finding new decorations or new organization stuff (and since my room doubles as a live-in closet, organization is crucial).
It’s important to me for my bedroom to feel like a space of relaxation and respite. My bedding is a mix of thrift throw pillows and blankets, a comfy linen duvet cover that made me feel like A Real Adult when I bought it, and an original Vagabondary pillow to top it off. My antique metal bed frame is a 100+ year old family heirloom. It’s one of those hand-me-downs that I resented as a child (ugh something old AGAIN), but now cherish. The tapestry above my bed was over my dining room table at my old apartment, but now it fits perfectly behind the wrought iron bed frame.
The overall style is a little difficult to describe, but all the pieces come together to create an eclectic, cozy boho vibe with some modern Southwestern influences.
I posted a picture on Instagram a few months back with a gorgeous vintage deer tapestry over my bed. I’ve since donated it to the blank wall over my fiancé’s fireplace (and yes, I am absolutely counting down the days till I get it back once we get married). I finally got around to filling the space left behind with some of my unique finds and faves, including:
+ a yarn wall hanging made from secondhand fibers from an art supply thrift store in Nashville + a foraged stick
+ dried flowers from a bridesmaid bouquet
+ Scotland’s native flowers tea towel purchased at a local shop in Scotland
+ a woven Aztec placemat-turned-wall-decor from my local KARM thrift store
+ a little 3D cactus from Goodwill
+ an adorable wintry scene hanging from my dear friend and coworker
+ a gridded wall hanging for my collection of stickers and paper memorabilia
My dresser also serves as a jewelry and accessory station. One of my favorite storage hacks I learned about in college is to use cute shower hooks as necklace holders.
I recently updated my shower hooks to these celestial sun, star, and moon hooks that I found at a local charity store for a few dollars. (Similar ones here and here.) I also scored a matching cup and soap dispenser in the same trip.
I used a long piece of driftwood collected at my family’s lake house and some twine tied at either end to create this simple DIY necklace organizer. I used the same technique to create a dried herb and flower mobile that hangs next to it.
I have an eclectic mix of little jewelry dishes and boxes to store my favorite pieces, one of my favorites being a little 3-compartment wooden tray from a local secondhand furniture and home decor sale hosted by Help You Dwell. I found similar ones here and here.
I have a lot of clothes. A lot. That means I’ve had to get creative with my clothing storage beyond just my small stand-in closet (think a walk-in closet with only enough room to walk in and turn around). Rolling clothes racks have been a life saver for me, both for my personal closet and also when I sell vintage clothes at markets. They’re easy to set up and fold down, moveable, and really durable (as you can see I’ve TOTALLY loaded mine up).
This coat rack is right next to my door and serves as a functional but pretty display of some of my favorite coats. I also found a short shoe rack at my local KARM Thrift Store that just happens to fit perfectly underneath the clothes rack. Before I found it, my boots were stacked and scattered under the coats in a most haphazard and unattractive fashion. Now I can fit more shoes — and it looks cute! You can find a similar clothes rack here and shoe rack here.
(My next project will be to get all matching coat hangers, but that may have to wait for our wedding registry.)
Those are a few of my cozy corners in my bedroom. Hopefully it gives you some ideas for styling or organization that you hadn’t thought of! Do you have any favorite nooks in your bedroom? Tell me about them in the comments!
